Antique Wheeling Font on Square Base Oil Lamp-Hobbs, Brockunier and Co-Vintage 1870-80-Ready to Use

This listing is for an antique oil lamp with a Hobbs, Brockunier patented center connecting piece and a Wheeling font on a square base. The lamp font is labeled “WHEELING” and is shown on page 157, of the book “Oil Lamps-The Kerosene Era in North America” by Catherine M. V. Thuro. All of the lamps on this page are Hobbs lamps and the lamps listed and pictured on this page date from the 1870’s & 80’s.

This is a very beautiful lamp. The brass burner this one comes with is not marked and is a #1 size, but is probably a later replacement. The chimney is a new quality hand blown reproduction with a lovely beaded top that I have supplied. The lamp measures about 9″ tall to the top of the base not including the burner. The chimney is 7 1/2″ tall. With the chimney and burner in place the overall height of the lamp is about 17″ tall and it measures 4″ across the foot. It also has an early brass collar often found on lamps from this 1870’s period.

Condition is very good for a lamp this old. There are no noticeable chips…… I did find a couple of tiny bubbles in the font that form often as the glass cools in the mold. About the only other thing of note I see is the white square base has a few small black lines (See close ups in last 3 pictures) …..this is not noticeable or disfiguring, but I have provided close up pictures so you can judge for yourself. The lines appear to have been in the surface for a very long, long time and do not go through the opaque glass on the inside. Again this is probably something that occurs as the glass cools and it gets dirt and discolors over its over 100 years of age. The brass collar has good threads that are not stripped and the burner turns in and out easily. The burner works fine and has a new wick as well that moves up and down easily…..all you need to do is fill it with lamp oil and light it. I did polish the collar, connecting stem piece and the burner so they match and will acquire patina again evenly as they continue to age. Great item for when the lights go out at home during a storm…..these make very elegant and special gifts as well. They are also just wonderful to use….romantic and chic! This is a beautiful and unusual lamp in a fantastic pattern ….great piece to add to any collection and is ready to use again!
